Each faint trail is one simulated future for this strategy. The bold line is the median — half of runs finished above it, half below. The shaded band spans the lucky 10th to unlucky 90th percentile, so an outcome inside the band was reasonable to expect; outside, less so.

Key takeaways
  • The best prop firm is the one whose specific rules match your specific trading style
  • Scalpers need firms without minimum holding time rules and tight daily loss limits
  • EA traders need firms that explicitly permit automated strategies
  • Gold traders should check XAU/USD spread and position sizing rules specifically
  • Beginners should prioritise clear rules and fee refund policies over profit split percentage

Every prop firm comparison site ranks firms on a generic scale. The problem is that the best firm for a scalper is often a poor choice for a swing trader, and the best firm for an EA trader is different again. Prop firm rules are not interchangeable — daily loss limits, minimum holding times, consistency rules, and instrument restrictions interact with different trading styles in very different ways.

This guide matches the five firms TradeOnMath has reviewed — FTMO, FundedNext, E8 Markets, The5%ers, and FunderPro — to five trading style profiles. All five firms have live affiliate links on this site, disclosed on every relevant page.

For scalpers and day traders

Best: FundedNext or E8 Markets 8/10 — No minimum holding time, flexible rules

Scalpers need two things from a prop firm: no minimum position holding time and daily loss limits that accommodate a high trade frequency. Both FundedNext and E8 Markets allow positions to be opened and closed within seconds — no minimum holding rule. FTMO also permits this but its daily loss limit of 5% means a scalper taking 20-30 trades per day has more individual loss events that could combine to breach the limit than a swing trader taking 2-3 trades.

Weighing E8 against FTMO specifically? E8 Markets vs FTMO shows how trailing and static drawdown change your room after a winning run.

For swing traders

Best: FTMO 9/10 — Monthly payout acceptable, rules match swing style

FTMO's rules are almost perfectly designed for swing traders — no minimum trading day requirement beyond 4 per phase, no time limit, and a 10% maximum drawdown that accommodates the wider stops swing strategies typically use. The monthly payout cycle that disadvantages scalpers is irrelevant for a swing trader who isn't depending on weekly income from the account.

FundedNext is also a strong choice for swing traders who want faster payout access. All five firms on this list allow overnight and weekend holding.

For EA and algorithmic traders

Best: The5%ers or E8 Markets 8/10 — EAs explicitly permitted, consistent rule enforcement

EA traders need explicit EA permission (not just implicit tolerance), stable rule enforcement, and enough drawdown room for the EA's natural variance. The5%ers explicitly permits EAs with unique strategies and has maintained consistent rules for years. E8 Markets also explicitly permits EAs and supports four platforms including cTrader, which many EAs are built for.

FundedNext and FunderPro restrict EAs — FundedNext bans bots and automated execution not explicitly approved, and FunderPro bans HFT and arbitrage. FTMO permits EAs but has historically taken a conservative stance on review.

For gold (XAU/USD) traders

Best: FundedNext or FTMO 8-9/10 — Competitive gold spreads, no position restrictions

Gold traders have two specific requirements: competitive XAU/USD spreads and no position size restrictions on gold specifically. Both FundedNext and FTMO report competitive gold spreads and impose no instrument-specific restrictions on XAU/USD. FundedNext has been specifically noted in community reviews for its gold trading conditions.

The5%ers tight 4% drawdown rule is particularly problematic for gold traders because XAUUSD has higher daily volatility than most forex pairs. A 4% drawdown on gold requires tighter position sizing than on EUR/USD for equivalent stop distances. Run the Position Size Calculator with XAUUSD parameters before attempting a The5%ers challenge with a gold strategy.

For beginners

Best: FTMO or FundedNext 9/8/10 — Clear rules, fee refund, established support

Beginners benefit most from clear rules, fee refund policies, established support infrastructure, and enough drawdown room to survive early learning curve variance. FTMO's 10% drawdown, clear documentation, and 10-year track record make it the safest first choice. FundedNext's 15% challenge profit share means even a failed challenge that generated some profit returns 15% of it.

The5%ers is explicitly not recommended for beginners — the 4% drawdown rule is unforgiving for traders still developing their consistency. FunderPro's 2026 trust concerns make it a secondary rather than primary choice for a first funded account. For more on how challenge math works, see our guide on the math of prop firm challenges.
